OpenAI launches ‘Dots’

OpenAI has introduced “Dots”, a new type of always-on artificial intelligence agent designed to work on tasks in the background rather than responding only to individual prompts. The company announced Dots on September 29, 2026, positioning the technology as a step beyond conventional chatbot use. For Pakistani users and businesses, the development could make AI more useful for ongoing research, content production, project management and repetitive digital work.

What are ChatGPT Dots?

Dots are designed to turn ChatGPT from a mainly prompt-based assistant into an agent that can continue working towards an assigned responsibility. OpenAI describes them as “always-on” agents that can learn how a user works from feedback and maintain progress between conversations.

OpenAI’s examples include a Dot tracking product usage and revenue, preparing an investor presentation, checking customer requirements against company documents, or monitoring software-development work. Users can assign an outcome and allow the agent to handle intermediate steps while bringing important decisions back to the human.

OpenAI says Dots are powered by GPT-6 Astra and have their own cloud computers. This allows some work to continue without the user’s personal computer being actively used.

  • Dots are designed to pursue user-defined goals with less step-by-step supervision.
  • – OpenAI says each Dot has its own cloud computer and browser and is powered by GPT-6 Astra.
  • – The agents can connect with more than 4,000 apps through OpenAI’s ecosystem, subject to permissions.
  • – Dots can be accessed through ChatGPT, Slack and Microsoft Teams.
  • – OpenAI says users remain in control through permissions, custom rules, reviews and approval requirements.

How Dots Will Works

A major feature is the ability to connect Dots to external tools and services. OpenAI says its ecosystem gives Dots access to more than 4,000 apps, although capabilities depend on the services connected and permissions granted.

Dots can be reached through ChatGPT, while OpenAI also supports Slack and Microsoft Teams. Users can change direction, provide feedback or pause a Dot as work progresses.

For businesses in Pakistan, potential applications could include preparing recurring reports, organizing project information, drafting marketing material, monitoring customer feedback and updating documents. These are possible uses, not guarantees that every connected service will support every task.

Safety and user control

The move towards autonomous AI also raises questions about what software should be allowed to do without direct approval. OpenAI says Dots include safeguards, permissions and review systems intended to limit sensitive actions.

OpenAI’s documentation says users can set custom rules defining actions that are allowed, require approval or are blocked. Some actions, such as changing a password, remain subject to user control. Enterprise administrators can also control whether employees can use Dots, connect workplace services or allow local computer access.

Reuters reported that the launch comes amid wider industry concerns about autonomous AI agents acting in unintended ways. That makes permission settings and human review important as these systems gain access to more applications and data.

Why Dots matter for AI users

The Dots launch reflects a broader shift in artificial intelligence from generating answers to completing multi-step tasks. Reuters reported that OpenAI is competing in an increasingly crowded agent market, where technology companies are developing systems intended to operate across applications with less continuous human direction.

OpenAI says Dots are rolling out across web, mobile and desktop for eligible plans in supported markets. Enterprise availability can depend on workspace administrator settings, and the company says some features are being gradually rolled out.

For Pakistani freelancers, startups and companies, the practical significance will depend on availability, pricing, connected apps and reliability. The technology could reduce repetitive digital work, but users will still need to review important outputs and control access to sensitive accounts and information.

OpenAI’s Dots mark a development in ChatGPT and artificial intelligence, moving the service towards agents that can pursue tasks over time instead of simply answering prompts. The technology offers potential productivity benefits, but its usefulness will depend on access, app integrations, reliability and human oversight. For Pakistani users, the next question will be how quickly Dots become broadly available and how well they fit local business and professional workflows.
