Pakistani freelancers earned a record $1.76 billion in foreign exchange during fiscal year 2025-26<\/strong>, according to State Bank of Pakistan data, highlighting the growing role of remote workers in the country\u2019s digital exports. The figure is 78 percent higher<\/strong> than the $984 million recorded in FY2024-25. Importantly, the $1.76 billion figure covers the full fiscal year<\/strong>, not the first quarter of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pakistan\u2019s freelance economy reaches a new record.<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The latest figures show freelance export earnings rising from $984 million in FY2024-25 to about $1.76 billion in FY2025-26. Growth came from both information technology and non-IT freelance services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IT freelancers generated more than $1.16 billion<\/strong> during FY2025-26, compared with $779 million a year earlier, an increase of roughly 49 per cent. Non-IT freelance services added about $600 million, bringing total freelance export earnings to a record level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rise was visible well before the year ended. During the first half of FY2025-26, Pakistani freelancers earned $557 million<\/strong> in foreign exchange, up 58 per cent from $352 million in the same period a year earlier. By the end of the first nine months, IT freelancers alone had generated $856 million<\/strong>, about 50 per cent more than the $567 million recorded in the corresponding period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The figures underline a wider change in Pakistan\u2019s services economy. Pakistani workers are increasingly selling software development, graphic design, digital marketing, content creation, data-related services and other professional skills to overseas clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What the $1.76 billion milestone means<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pakistan\u2019s broader technology sector. IT and IT-enabled services exports reached $1.057 billion in the first quarter of FY2025-26<\/strong>, according to reported State Bank data, up about 21 per cent from the same quarter a year earlier. That measure covers the wider IT and ITeS sector and should not be confused with freelance earnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The distinction matters. The $1.76 billion figure is a full-year freelance total, while $1.057 billion is total IT and IT-enabled services exports for only the first quarter. Treating them as the same category would give a misleading picture of Pakistan\u2019s digital economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International freelance marketplaces, direct client relationships, agencies and professional networks have helped Pakistani workers reach global demand. Platforms such as Upwork and Fiverr remain prominent routes for finding overseas projects, while many freelancers also build portfolios and attract clients through LinkedIn and other online channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For young Pakistanis, freelancing can offer a relatively low-cost route into international work. A computer, dependable internet connection, marketable skills and access to payment channels can allow professionals in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi and smaller cities to work with clients abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skills and digital infrastructure will shape the next phase<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The record does not mean that every Pakistani freelancer is earning more. Official export figures measure foreign-exchange receipts across the sector and do not show the median freelancer\u2019s income or the distribution of earnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Competition is also becoming tougher. Global clients increasingly seek specialised capabilities in software engineering, artificial intelligence, data analytics, cybersecurity, video production, e-commerce and digital advertising. For a Pakistani freelancer<\/strong>, moving from general, low-cost services toward higher-value expertise may be important for maintaining long-term growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Payment infrastructure remains another key factor. Freelancers need dependable ways to receive international payments, convert foreign currency and access their earnings. Stable internet and electricity are equally important because remote work depends directly on digital connectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government and industry therefore face a challenge beyond increasing the number of freelancers. Better technical training, stronger digital infrastructure, easier payment systems, clearer rules and access to international markets could help convert rising freelance receipts into a more durable export industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Why Pakistani freelancers are gaining importance<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    The $1.76 billion milestone is significant because of both its size and speed of growth. Freelance export receipts increased 78 per cent in one year, while IT freelance earnings alone crossed the $1 billion mark during FY2025-26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The sector also offers Pakistan a way to diversify its foreign-exchange base. Unlike goods exports, digital services can be delivered internationally without shipping physical products. That makes the sector particularly relevant as Pakistan seeks to expand services exports and strengthen its digital economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    For individual freelancers, however, the opportunity comes with risks. International demand can change quickly, platform fees can reduce take-home earnings, and artificial intelligence is reshaping several categories of online work. Professionals who combine technical expertise with communication, problem-solving and strong portfolios may be better placed to compete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The record also points to the importance of formal financial channels. As more freelance income enters Pakistan, transparent payment systems and appropriate financial policies can help ensure that the country captures a larger share of the economic value generated by its digital workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
